Marcia S. Meer
May 14, 2015      כ"ו אייר תשע"ה

Marcia (Shkolnik) Meer was born in 1926 into an orthodox family on the west side of Chicago. Her parents imparted to her a love for Judaism and an appreciation for education. Despite the restrictive quotas for both Jews and women at that time, Marcia was admitted to Northwestern University where she obtained a degree from the School of Business. It was during her studies there that she met the love of her life, Bernard Meer. They married in 1948 and moved to an apartment on the west side of Chicago. Marcia became a teacher (accounting, typing, and shorthand) at the Chicago Jewish Academy, the forerunner of today’s Ida Crown Jewish Academy. Several years later, they migrated to West Rogers Park and joined Congregation KINS. In addition to raising three children, Marcia was quite active within KINS, Pioneer Women, Amit Women, Hadassah, and other Jewish organizations. Marcia and Bernie instilled a love of Judaism in their children, teaching by example. Their inspiration continues to impact each subsequent generation of the family to this day.
