RABBI ELI J. KAHN
Rabbi Eli Kahn emigrated to Chicago from Lithuania as a child. He was the son of Rabbi Moshe Zev and Chava Kahn and descended from a long line of rabbis. In the 1930's his father sent him back to Lithuania to study at Telshe Yeshiva. When it became clear that it was dangerous to remain in Europe, he returned to Chicago to complete his studies in Education and get Semicha at the Hebrew Theological College. Growing up watching his father, the rabbi at Tiffereth Moshe Synagogue, he easily followed in his footsteps. In 1943 he married Lillian (Chavazelet) Levin and together they ministered to several congregations over the years as Rabbi and Rebbitzen, notably in East Chicago, IN, St. Paul, MN., and NewCastle, PA. Rabbi Kahn received a Master's degree in Pastoral Counseling and became the Chaplain at Mayo Clinic for several years. Rabbi Kahn was a friend and counselor to his congregants and dedicated his life to his faith, his family, and his community. He left a legacy of compassion and caring for others. He was a good speaker and had a great sense of humor and could always tell a good story. In later years he received a Doctorate in Hebrew Letters from his alma mater. Eli and Lillian raised four children, fifteen grandchildren, and about thirty great-grandchildren and counting.
